IRS Tax Resolution: Frequently Asked Questions

A calculator sits on the left side of a blue and white background that includes the text 'IRS Tax Resolution: Frequently Asked Questions'

1. Who do you represent?

We provide IRS representation for both individual taxpayers and business entities.

2. What tax service areas do you represent?

Our tax service areas include assistance with IRS income tax, payroll tax matters, and tax audits.

3. What is Tax Information Authorization (Form 8821)?

Form 8821 gives us the right to obtain your confidential IRS tax records for specific years and tax types. It does not allow us to represent you—only to view your information.

4. What is a Power of Attorney (Form 2848)?

Form 2848 authorizes us to represent you before the IRS. With it, we can speak on your behalf, respond to notices, handle negotiations, and schedule meetings.

5. When does the tax resolution process begin?

We begin working on your case (during regular business hours) once you have:

  • Signed Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization)
  • Signed Form 2848 (Power of Attorney)
  • Signed the Engagement Letter and provided payment

6. Will you handle all communications with the IRS?

Yes. Once Form 2848 is in effect, we manage all correspondence, phone calls, and meetings with the IRS. Please do not contact them.

7. What should I do if I receive an IRS notice?

You will still receive notices by mail. Do not respond on your own. Scan and upload any new notices to the TaxDome portal so we can respond quickly and appropriately.

8. What are my responsibilities during the resolution process?

You must provide the documents, information, and signatures we request, accurately and in a timely manner. Any delay on your part can lengthen the process.

9. Should I contact the IRS myself?

No. Once you’ve given us Power of Attorney, it’s crucial to let us handle all IRS communications to avoid confusion or contradictions.

10. How long does the resolution process take?

Timelines vary. Factors include the complexity of your case, IRS backlog, and how promptly you provide documents. Some cases wrap up in a few months; others may take a year or more.

11. How will I stay informed about my case’s progress?

We offer monthly updates through:

  • Secure Zoom calls (scheduled as needed)
  • Chat Messages in the TaxDome portal
  • Recorded video updates if appropriate

You can also send us a chat message anytime in TaxDome, which maintains an audit trail for easy reference.

12. What if new tax issues arise during the process?

We’ll determine whether these additional concerns can be included in your current case or if you need a separate engagement. We’ll keep you informed about any changes or new authorizations needed.

13. What outcomes can I expect from tax resolution?

The IRS ultimately decides each case, but potential outcomes may include:

  • Installment agreements (payment plans)
  • Currently Not Collectible (CNC) hardship status
  • Offers in Compromise
  • Penalty abatements
  • Levy release
  • Lien release, Lien discharge, Lien Withdrawal or Lien subordination
  • Audit Exam and reconsideration
  • Appeals

We exercise due professional care in all negotiations but cannot guarantee a favorable result.

14. Do you handle state tax issues as well?

Yes, but only if specified in your engagement letter. Each state often requires its own Power of Attorney. We’ll need a separate agreement for any state work.

15. Will you file missing returns if I’m behind on filing?

Yes, provided that’s included in our engagement. We’ll identify the unfiled years and incorporate the necessary returns into your resolution strategy.

16. Do I need to provide financial documents for tax resolution?

Yes. To work toward a resolution, we require a clear view of your finances, including assets, liabilities, income, and expenses.

We’ll guide you on precisely what’s needed.
